On Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” Noah Schnapp, who portrays the closet gay teenager Will Byers, has come out as gay.
The 18-year-old actor wrote, “When I finally told my friends and family I was gay after being scared in the closet for 18 years and all they said was ‘we know'” in a video posted to his TikTok account on Thursday. Schnapp then lip-synced to an audio clip from another TikTok of someone saying, “You know what it never was? That grave. Never was it so severe. In all honesty, it won’t ever be that serious.
I guess I’m more similar to Will than I thought, Schnapp stated in the caption of his TikTok video.
Will Byers is gay and in love with his best buddy Mike, Schnapp revealed to Variety in July, following the release of the last two episodes of the fourth season of “Stranger Things” (Finn Wolfhard).
In the video, he mouthed along to a female voice as she spoke, adding, “You know what it never was? That grave… In all honesty, it won’t ever be that serious.
In text that appeared over the video, Schnapp continued, “When I eventually informed my friends and family I was homosexual after being afraid in the closet for 18 years, all they replied was ‘we know.

Will’s sexuality had previously been left up to the fans’ perception, but Schnapp revealed in a 2022 interview with Variety that his character was gay and in love with Mike Wheeler, his closest friend (played Finn Wolfhard).
He said on Will’s increasing comfort level, “Obviously, that was hinted at in Season 1.” “It was kind of there all the while, but you never really knew. Is he just maturing more slowly than his friends? They made it a very real, evident thing now that he is older.
The fact that he is gay and that he loves Mike is now undeniably apparent, according to Schnapp. But prior to that, it had a sluggish arc. It’s so simple to have a character suddenly become homosexual, therefore I believe it’s done so well.
