Avatar: The Way of Water Dominated the Box Office with $87 Million over the New Year’s Weekend

The year 2022 will come to a close with “Avatar: The Way of Water.”

James Cameron’s ambitious and extremely expensive return to Pandora, which made $24.4 million on Friday to bring its domestic total to $382.6 million, dominated the box office. The movie is expected to make $66.8 million this weekend or $87.8 million during the four-day break (the majority of companies will be closed on Monday because New Year’s Day falls on Sunday).

Box Office of Avatar: The Way Of Water:

“Avatar: The Way of Water” could surpass $445 million by the conclusion of the long weekend, surpassing “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” to become the second-highest-grossing domestic film of 2022. Both films were produced by Disney, which also acquired the “Avatar” rights as part of its 2019 acquisition of much of 20th Century Fox’s entertainment assets. With $718.7 million in sales, “Top Gun: Maverick” continues to be the most popular domestic event. Just behind “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” with its $411.3 million total, “Avatar: The Way of Water” is now the fourth-highest-grossing domestic title of 2022. However, it’s climbing the rankings quickly.

The threat of “Avatar: The Way of Water” makes Universal’s “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” a likely runner-up. The animated sequel made $6.5 million on Friday, with projections for weekend earnings of $15.9 million and four-day holiday earnings of $21.2 million. This implies that it will probably start 2023 with $66.6 million in earnings.

The third-place finisher on Friday was Disney and Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which made $1.8 million and increased its domestic gross to $434.9 million. Over the long weekend, it will bring in $5.2 million, and over $7 million overall.

Box Office of “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody”:

With over $1.5 million, Sony’s “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody” finished fourth on Friday. The biopic’s domestic revenue now totals little over $11 million. Over the holiday, it should bring in $5.2 million, leaving it with about $16 million.

“Babylon,” a grandiose look at the beginning of Hollywood from Paramount, kept sputtering. On Friday, the drama brought in a pitiful $935,000. Over the long weekend, it should pull in less than $4 million, which would bring its domestic revenue to a dismal $11 million and change. The film, which stars Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt as dysfunctional Silent period stars, was made at a cost of $80 million, however it may end up losing more money due to marketing expenses.
