Messi, 35, who has spent the majority of his illustrious career playing in Europe, entered the field for the South American rival. The sixth World Cup for Messi. Despite being widely regarded as the finest player right now and maybe the greatest player ever, he has never won the World Cup.

Sunday saw Paris Saint-Germain post on Twitter, “Final day for our two Parisians.” “You have our admiration,”

The four top attackers and goal scorers from this year’s World Cup will square off in what the French team described as a “face-to-face” game on Sunday morning.

Olivier Giroud of France and Julián lvarez of Argentina both had four goals, while Mbappé and Messi have each scored five so far.

With a victory on Sunday, France would join a select group of teams that have won back-to-back World Cups, a feat last done by Brazil in 1958 and 1962. Four years ago, Mbappé was a member of the winning squad.

Since defeating West Germany in Mexico in 1986 and bringing home the World Cup trophy, Argentina hasn’t won the competition. Messi led the squad to the Brazil finals in 2014, but Germany prevailed.
